ESPN’s Pierre Lebrun is reporting that unrestricted free agent forward Mikkel Boedker has signed a four year deal with the San Jose Sharks.

After being traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Colorado Avalanche, forward Mikkel Boedker set himself to cash in as a free agent by scoring four goals with 12 points in 18 games. According to Pierre LeBrun, Boedker has agreed to terms with the San Jose Sharks on a four year deal worth $4 million annually.

Boedker has his flaws, but he is a very skilled forward coming off a strong contract year. His 51 points tied his career high set during the 2013-14 season and he did in two fewer games. With 17 goals, he had the second highest scoring season of his career. Boedker has consistently been a net positive in takeaways, forcing 38 turnovers while only turning the puck over 32 times in 2015-16.

He isn’t that great of a possession player at even strength but he generally justifies that with what he can add on the power play. Boedker should be a great weapon for the already lethal Sharks power play. It’s a steep price to pay for Boedker but in order to upgrade your team in free agency, you have to be willing to overpay or you have to get very lucky. Sharks did very well to get Boedker at a reasonable price.
