A Washington Post article says Donald Trump paid for items signed by Tim Tebow at an auction using money from a charity in his name.
In the world of politics, there may be no more polarizing name than Donald Trump…who is just weeks away from being the official Republican Party nominee for President. In the NFL, there may be no more polarizing figure than Tim Tebow, who hasn’t played in a regular season game since 2012 but is still thought of by some as a great player.
It would make total sense that the two men would come together in some way, but the Washington Post recently published an article saying that Trump may have done something that is a violating of federal tax law when it came to purchasing items signed by Tebow:
"Four years ago, at a charity fundraiser in Palm Beach, Donald Trump got into a bidding war at the evening’s live auction. The items up for sale: A Denver Broncos helmet, autographed by then-star quarterback Tim Tebow, and a Tebow jersey.Trump won, eventually, with a bid of $12,000….But Trump didn’t actually pay with his own money.Instead, the Susan G. Komen organization — the breast-cancer nonprofit that hosted the party — got a $12,000 payment from another nonprofit , the Donald J. Trump Foundation."
According to the piece, Trump’s foundation was largely stocked with other peoples money and he hadn’t put his own money in for three years running by that point.
The purchase is apparently raising flags with the IRS as well. Laws prohibit charities from using money to, in essence, buy items for personal use. If Donald Trump later sold the items to raise money for that charity or another one, he’s likely find. If the items are sitting in a home or office and weren’t reported, he could face a fine.
As it turns out, the night of the auction was the same night Tebow and the Broncos were getting killed by the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, ending Tebow’s season of
being lucky
miraculous wins en route to the postseason.
