Boston has long been a city of champions, as the Red Sox and Patriots have dominated their respective sports for the last decade or so. The Celtics have more titles than any team in NBA history and are hoping that Durant will help bring them championship number 18.
Durant has not made it known where he plans to play next season, but those close to him have said he will probably return to the Oklahoma City Thunder for one more run at a championship. Last season, they brought the defending champion Golden State Warriors to the brink of elimination, only to blow a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference Finals.
Ortiz was a big reason why the Boston Red Sox broke the “Curse of the Bambino,” and he has now been a part of three World Series championships for the Red Sox. He plans to retire after this season, so he will have plenty of time to watch Durant play if he comes to the Celtics.
The odds are that Durant is using these meeting to get a feel for what he plans to do after this upcoming season. Thunders guard Russell Westbrook has one more year left on his contract, and that could play a big role whether or not Durant returns after next season.
The Celtics have not won a title since 2008 when their big 3 of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Finals MVP Paul Pierce led them to a victory over long-time rival Los Angeles Lakers.
The Boston faithful is hoping Durant will bring them No. 18.
