NBA Rumors: Nets agree to deal with Trevor Booker
By Tom West
The Brooklyn Nets have a new power forward after coming to an agreement with Trevor Booker in NBA free agency.
Another player is on the move. 2016 NBA free agency is the most expensive summer in basketball history and the roster changes keep coming. The Brooklyn Nets, after trading Thaddeus Young for the 20th pick in this year’s draft (which turned into 6’7″ combo guard Caris LeVert) have been in the market for a new power forward to pair with Brook Lopez, and they’ve made a deal to address that issue.
Whether or not more frontcourt moves will come is yet to be seen, but Trevor Booker has reached an agreement with the Nets.
Tony Jones of The Salt Lake Tribune has reported the agreement.
Last season, Booker established himself as a key piece of a young, talented, defensive Utah Jazz team. They struggled with injuries and ultimately missed the playoffs as their offense lacked enough firepower as well, but Booker did all he could off the bench in 20.7 minutes per game.
Per 36 minutes, he averaged 10.2 points, 10 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.9 blocks, and while he doesn’t possess much shooting range and only knocked down 12 threes all season, he brings a lot as a defensive energizer and has good versatility to switch out to the perimeter.
At a fairly undersized 6’8″, his solid speed and hustle help him in that regard.
While $9 million per year may look like a lot to some, it’s cheaper than some deals that have emerged and is certainly good value for a player like Booker.
At the very least, he’s a good replacement for Young. Along with Jeremy Lin and Caris LeVert, the Nets and their fans have a few new players to look forward to as they hope to put together a remotely respectable record next season.
