Rajai Davis hits sixth reverse cycle in MLB history
By Brad Weiss
Rajai Davis completed a reverse cycle on Saturday, becoming the sixth player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat.
The Cleveland Indians were on an incredible win streak heading into their contest with the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Having won 14 straight contests, the Indians were the hottest team in baseball, but they lost this one 9-6. However, the big story on this day was Rajai Davis, who hit the first reverse cycle since 2008, and the sixth all-time.
The cycle was the first for the Cleveland Indians since Travis Hafner completed the feat on August 14, 2003, against the Minnesota Twins, and it was the first reverse cycle in club history. A reverse cycle is when the batter hits a home run, then a triple, then a double and finished with a single.
Davis, who was playing against his former team, led off the game with his ninth home run of the season off Blue Jays’ starter Marco Estrada. Davis then went on to triple in the third, double in the seventh, and finally finished his historic day with a single in the ninth inning.
This was only the second cycle of the season for Major League Baseball, as Freddie Freeman was the only other play to do it this year. Freeman hit for the cycle on June 15 against the Cincinnati Reds, needing extra innings to complete the feat.
The 35-year old Davis is hitting .275 this season and has been a consistent contributor all season long.
The Cleveland Indians currently have a 6.5 game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central Division and have been one of the bigger surprises in Major League Baseball this year.
