Celtics invite Tom Brady to Kevin Durant meeting
By Brad Weiss
Kevin Durant is in search of his first NBA championship, so the Celtics called on a Super Bowl Champion to help in their recruitment.
The Boston Celtics have the richest history in the National Basketball Association. Winners of 17 championships, Boston could probably sell Kevin Durant on their tradition alone. However, they called in the big guns on Saturday, bringing New England Patriots Super Bowl Champion quarterback Tom Brady to their meeting.
The Celtics have a lot of reasons why Durant should give them a serious look this off-season. They have the best young coach in basketball in Brad Stevens, they have arguably the best fans in the league, and they are not very far away from being a top contender in the Eastern Conference.
It was a power move by the Celtics to bring in Tom Brady, who some believe is the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL. He has a history of winning, and will be able to tell Durant all about how much New Englanders will love him if he can bring a championship back to Boston.
Most people believe that Durant is likely to stay with Oklahoma City for the upcoming season, but these visits can be a stepping stone to locking him up when he hits the free agent market again after the 2016-17 season. Russell Westbrook is likely to bolt OKC after next season, and Durant could find a long-term home with one of the teams he is visiting this weekend. His Thunder came within one win of going to the NBA Finals last season, so he may want one more shot to bring a championship home to Oklahoma City.
Durant’s Thunder play in a very tough conference, and if he moves into the Eastern Conference, he will have a much easier path to his first championship. The Cavaliers will be the perennial favorites as long as LeBron James stays there, but a Durant-led Celtics team could challenge him every year.
The Boston Celtics are NBA royalty, and playing for that franchise would seal Durant’s legacy if he can bring them another championship.
