Despite rumblings that Yankees relief pitcher Andrew Miller would be on the trading block, New York has told Miller that he isn’t going anywhere.
Andrew Miller has definitely been in the conversation for one of the better relievers in the MLB. The 31-year-old has 43 saves during his year and a half with the Yankees, and his contract is only $9 million. The Yankees could conceivably trade him and get quite a deal for their money.
However, the Yankees have informed Miller that his isn’t going anywhere. In an interview with MLB.com, Miller stated:
"“The media has been throwing a few things out there, but I’ve had reassurances from them at the times I’ve talked to them that it’s something that hasn’t been discussed or planned for or anything like that. I think that’s kind of nice.”"
The Yankees have struggled as of late, taking a three-game losing streak into the July 4th weekend. They’re 40-41 on the season, and haven’t exactly been the Yankees of old since the retirement of Derek Jeter. Even before that the Yankees struggled to reach their full potential, failing to make the postseason in 2013 and 2014 and losing in the first round to the Astros in 2015.
The Yankees are Schrodinger’s baseball team, as there are many programs who would like to have a .500 record referred to as a “down year”. Such is life when you’re the most decorated baseball team in history. The Yankees are aging, and there might be several trades and free agent signings in their future. But at least for now, those moves do not include Andrew Miller.
