NBA rumors: Stephen Curry letting Kevin Durant be the alpha dog?
By John Buhler
With the Golden State Warriors being heavily favored to win it all next summer, did Stephen Curry just rescind his alpha dog role to Kevin Durant via text?
When Kevin Durant agreed to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016 NBA free agency, he knew that he would be joining a team with three of the top 15 players in the game in point guard Stephen Curry, shooting guard Klay Thompson, and power forward Draymond Green.
For as stacked as this starting five is with regardless who Golden State trots out at center, one thing the Warriors have to figure out immediately is who is the alpha dog on this juggernaut team: Is it Curry or is it now Durant? Green may still be the emotional leader on this team, but the top dog has to emerge or things might get a little messy in the Bay Area next season.
In a tweet by The Cauldron’s Andy Glockner, it seems abundantly clear that Curry is willing to rescind his alpha dog role to Durant on the 2016-17 Warriors.
A person close to the situation said that the text messages between Curry and Durant were all about how Curry “could care less about who is the face of the franchise, who gets the recognition, and who sells the most shoes.”
Obviously they have to work together as now they are teammates, but these are the second and third best player in the NBA only behind the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James. Curry is the face of Under Armour and Durant is a signature athlete of Nike.
It’s amazing how Curry is willing to shed his ego to field another championship team to yield to a guy who has never won one. Yes, Durant is certainly the more complete player of the two, but it’s odd to see a star player be the humble about the arrival of another great talent to what was undoubtedly his team.
