4. Minnesota Timberwolves

Durant left the Thunder to join a “super team”. In today’s NBA, that’s something that all players are looking to do. The Minnesota Timberwolves already have Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. That’s a nice duo to build around for the future. What they lack is a guard. Enter Russell Westbrook.

The Timberwolves could have a dominant “Big Three” as soon as the 2017-18 season if they trade for Westbrook. Trading for him would be hard, especially since it can be assumed that both Towns and Wiggins are untouchable. But the Timberwolves might have just enough covetable assets to pull it off.

Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn would be two likely pieces involved. LaVine gives them a talented young guard while Dunn provides the Thunder with a potential long-term replacement. Sure, losing Dunn would hurt. But he would be surplus if the Timberwolves had Westbrook and he sure has more value than Ricky Rubio.

Draft picks would likely have to be added as well. Westbrook might be willing to re-sign in Minnesota if he plays there for a year. He might realize just how good Towns and Wiggins are. The Timberwolves have cap space and assets to trade to make a competitive team fairly quickly. Consider them a dark horse, but a very serious one.
