2. San Antonio Spurs

Quite frankly, the San Antonio Spurs have had an odd go of things throughout 2016 NBA free agency at this point. They were one of the teams in play to land players like Durant and like point guard Mike Conley, but they obviously struck out on both of those. Moreover, they might be losing the stalwart of their franchise this offseason to retirement in Tim Duncan. However, they still come in at No. 2 on this list.

Obviously the Spurs were going to have the core to at least compete with the Warriors regardless of if they signed Conley earlier (Durant obviously would change the entire conversation) with the likes of Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, and even guys like Tony Parker to a certain degree even. What really vaults them to the No. 2 position on this list, though, is actually their latest veteran signing.

In the wake of the Durant signing and with rumblings that Duncan might be on his way out, the Spurs went and made one of my favorite signings of free agency as they added veteran center Pau Gasol. He seems like a player who was created to play under Gregg Popovich and should thrive next to all of these pieces. More importantly, that size could prove to be a hardship for the Warriors in a head-to-head matchup and the Spurs could have at least one significant advantage to help them topple the clear favorites.
