Marvel’s new Iron Man isn’t a man at all: Meet Riri Williams

Perhaps a more suitable name might be Iron Woman, or better yet, The Best Iron Man Ever.

Brian Michael Bendis is a comic book writer and all around cool guy who is no stranger to female-led series. He wrote Alias from 2001-2004, which inspired Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and then he revived Spider-Woman / Jessica Drew and brought her to the New Avengers. Most recently, he’s been working on Civil War II, which focused on a conflict between Tony Stark / Iron Man and Captain Marvel / Carol Danvers.

As TIME exclusively learned, once Civil War II wraps, Tony Stark will leave the suit and Bendis is preparing to put a new girl in his place: Riri Williams.

But who is she? As TIME reveals, “Riri is a science genius who enrolls in MIT at the age of 15. She comes to the attention of Tony when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm.”

Inspired by the tough streets of Chicago, Bendis admits:

"“[…] And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me. I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place.”"

Sure, she sounds amazing! I’m 100% here for her beautiful hair and the wonderful art by Stefano Caselli (who currently works on the Avengers comic), but there will always be haters out there. Even still, Bendis is optimistic and agrees there’s always room for more representation.

And there’s always room for a girl who might be a little smarter and little less jaded than Tony Stark. As Bendis describes:

"“Her brain is maybe a little better than his. She looks at things from a different perspective that makes the armor unique. He can’t help but go maybe I should buy her out.”"

Civil War II Issue #7 is still a little far off — we’re about to get Issue #3 — but now that I know who will take up the Iron Man mantle next, I kind of want it to end a little sooner.

What do you think? Ready for a new-and-improved Iron Man or is Tony Stark the only Iron Man you’ll take? Are you even still reading Civil War II?

Perhaps the biggest question: will Riri Williams ever make it to the big-screen?
