England suffered the worst upset in centuries during Euro 2016, losing to Iceland 2-1. The USMNT’s Jurgen Klinsmann has emerged as a candidate for incumbent Roy Hodgson’s job.
On June 24th, England voted to leave the European Union. On June 28th, they were forced out of the Euro 2016 tournament. The loss to underdog Iceland brought about an apparent need for change for the English football team as thousands of bad jokes linked their exit from the tournament to their exit from the EU. Coach Roy Hodgson resigned after the loss.
So, England needs a new coach, and they need him or her fast. According to The Telegraph. Jurgen Klinsmann is on the short list of candidates to take up England’s mantle.
Klinsmann has had many stops in his coaching career, most notably as the German national team’s coach, Bayern Munich, and the USMNT. He’s been criticized in the past for his bold strategies and questionable personnel changes, most recently the release of Landon Donovan from the 2014 US World Cup team. Currently, Klinsmann’s contract with the USMNT extends to 2018, but it would be hard to believe that England couldn’t buy him out if they really wanted him.
The Jurgen Klinsmann experiment has not brought stability to a mercurial USMNT, in fact the team is more unstable than ever. We’ve had some great triumphs during Klinsmann’s tenure here, but those triumphs always seem to pair with embarrassment in kind. I don’t think anyone would mourn the loss of Klinsmann, I believe thoughts would turn to the next coach very quickly.
