After four seasons, Larry Brown has decided to step down as the head coach of the SMU Mustangs men’s basketball team.

SMU Mustangs head coach Larry Brown has confirmed to ESPN that is resigning after talks about a long-term extension broke down. Brown stated that he needed to talk to his players first before telling the public.

Brown reportedly wanted SMU to sign him to a five-year contract extension. The school did not want to make that long of a commitment. However, they wanted Brown to stick around, so they offered him a much shorter deal. Brown was said to be offended by the move.

Tim Jankovich will be taking over for Brown. SMU has been planning for years to have him promoted once the former NBA coach decided to step away from the university. Jankovich has experience as the head coach of Illinois State and North Texas.

Jankovich is one of the highest paid assistant coaches in college basketball. That shows how much the Mustangs value him.

The Mustangs are on a self-imposed postseason ban after NCAA officials started an investigation over Keith Frazier, a former player. Some feel that might have something to do with Brown leaving SMU.

Interestingly, Brown has had NCAA sanctions thrown at him at each of the three head coaching jobs that he has had in college. In addition to his gig with SMU, Brown has also been the head coach at Kansas and UCLA.

For all that is said about Brown being nomadic, he is still quite an effective basketball coach. He guided the Mustangs to a 94-39 record during his four-year tenure. Brown has a really good understanding of the game, so if he decides to coach again, then there is a very good chance that he will win a lot of games at his next destination as well.
