DraftKings Late MLB Picks For July 9

Ten of the games are in the early tournament, so that makes it the larger tournament of the day. We have plenty of options for figurative fireworks before you get to the literal ones!

More from DraftKings

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Tyler Anderson has never faced the Phillies, but he is off to a brilliant start to his career. Despite the 0-3 record, Anderson boasts a 3.03 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. Yes, this game is at Coors Field, but Anderson has a 2.50 ERA in three starts at Coors Field. He could be a great sneaky play tonight!

Anderson’s opponent, Jerad Eickhoff, has never faced the Rockies either. He has a career 3.08 ERA, but he is facing a potent offense. Can his strikeouts make up for the runs he gives up?

Chad Kuhl will make his third start, but this one comes against a potent Cubs offense. He has a 4.09 ERA against the Dodgers and A’s, but the Cubs are an entirely different animal. You want no part of this.

Best Bet:

Max Scherzer ($13,700):Ā Scherzer has faced the Mets 298 times over the years, and has racked up 100 strikeouts. 100! Against one team! So what if the Mets have hit 12 homers and have scored 30 runs? They are hitting only .221, and, that’s whole lot of strikeouts. Any damage done should be mitigated by all the strikeouts.

Honorable Mention:

Jon Lester ($10,300):Ā The Pirates have hit a mediocre.247 off of Lester in 190 at bats, but they have five homers and 19 RBI. The 52 strikeouts are nice, but it’s still much lower than Scherzer’s rate against the Mets. Getting adequate return on the money seems unlikely for Lester tonight.

Dark Horse:

Logan Verrett ($4,000):Ā The Nationals are only hitting .214 in 28 at bats with a homer, three RBI, and six strikeouts against Verrett. It will be an uphill battle against Scherzer, but there is a great chance that Verrett could produce some value for his price. That said, his last start game on June 29th, against this team. They scored two runs on four hits and four walks while only striking out once.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about ā€œstackingā€ pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Well, the Mets have had some success against Max Scherzer, and strikeouts don’t count against hitters in FanDuel. Asdrubal Cabrera ($2,700) is 13-51(.255) with three walks, four doubles, a homer, and four RBI. Never mind those 16 strikeouts. Alejandro De Aza ($2,300) is only 11-46(.239), but he does have five walks, a double, a homer, and two RBI. Curtis Granderson ($3,400) is 8-24 with seven walks, three doubles, two homers, and four RBI against Scherzer. James Loney ($2,500) is 8-29(.276) with a walk, a double, two homers, and eight RBI. Jose Reyes ($2,400) is 5-15 with a double and a RBI against Scherzer. There could be value in these numbers.

Matt Joyce ($3,100) defies the splits, and is 5-14(.357) with a walk, a double, two homers, and six RBI. If the Pirates trust him against Jon Lester, you should too. Jordy Mercer ($3,200) is 4-11(.364) with two doubles, a homer, and two RBI. Sean Rodriguez ($3,200) is only 10-43(.233), but he has four walks, three doubles, a homer, and five RBI against Lester. There is potential here.

Check out this line: .552, eight RBI, three strikeouts in 29 at bats. Want to guess what that is? It looks like a Rogers Hornsby or Ty Cobb line, right? It is the Dodgers’ career numbers against San Diego starter Luis Perdomo. Yasiel Puig ($3,600) is 4-5 with a triple and three RBI. Chase Utley ($3,900) is 3-5 wtih two RBI. Howie KendrickĀ ($3,200) is a perfect 3-3 with two doubles. Adrian Gonzalez ($3,900) is 1-3 with three walks and a RBI. This presents a tough challenge for the night slate. Should you go with a Coors Field stack, or with a Dodgers stack against Perdomo?

Alexei Ramirez ($2,100) is 3-9 with two homers and six RBI off of Brandon McCarthy. Wil Myers ($4,700) has also homered off of McCarthy, but it is his only hit in nine at bats. Matt Kemp ($3,200) is 6-12, but has no counting stats.

You will find Ricky Nolasco in this section often. Many a million has been given out because of the stats he helps players accrue. Ian Desmond ($5,000) is 5-19(.263) with two walks, two doubles, and two RBI. Prince Fielder ($3,600) is 3-10 with five walks, two homers, and three RBI. At least he doesn’t have to face Drew Stubbs. Stubbs is 6-14(.429) with a solo homer against Nolasco.
