Norman Powell dunks over Willie Cauley-Stein (Video)
The Toronto Raptors may have a diamond in the rough on their hands after seeing Norman Powell dunk all over the Sacramento Kings in Summer League action.
When one thinks Toronto Raptors, names like Demar Derozan and Kyle Lowry come to mind. Norman Powell? Not so much. That said, the 6’4″ 220 lb shooting guard out of University of California Los Angeles quietly made a name for himself as a rookie this past 2015-2016 NBA season scoring 5.6 PPG on 42.4 percent from the field, 40.4 from beyond the arc, and 81.1 from the line in 14.8 MPG.
Powell was drafted 46th overall in 2015 by the Milwaukee Bucks, which explains the chip that is visible on his shoulder every time he hits the court through his intense, explosive play. The 23-year-old did struggle in the playoffs, scoring just 3.8 PPG on 38.6 percent shooting from the field.
However, he is out to prove himself to the Toronto brass and fan base with teammate Cory Joseph not exactly lighting it up and Terrence Ross continuing to be absent in the playoffs for three straight years.
He will certainly compete with the aforementioned guards, but his main competition comes from last year’s 20th overall pick, Delon Wright. The Utah product averaged 3.8 PPG in 8.5 MPG while shooting 45 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from downtown.
Powell is making his presence felt Toronto’s Summer League play, jamming on Sacramento Kings’ 2015 sixth overall pick, 7’1″ center Willie Cauley-Stein, and 6’10” power forward Arturas Gudaitis, as seen in the highlight below.
This is a nice first impression for Powell to make with the Raptors who hope to get some significant contributions from the young and dynamic player this season. If he can continue this play from the Summer League into the regular season, the Raptors will have a nice sleeper on their hands.
