4. 2002: The Tie

The 2002 Major League All-Star Game was held at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the home of the Brewers. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig was a former owner of the Brewers, so having the event in Milwaukee was special to him. The game would forever change the way the event was played.

Prior to the game, Major League Baseball held their first Final Vote, though at the time it was called the “30th man competition.” This allowed one player from each league to be voted in to the event, and Johnny Damon and Andruw Jones were the first to win. This still goes on today, but it is called “MLB All-Star Game Final Vote.”

One major highlight of the game happened in the first inning, when the greatest home run hitter in baseball history was robbed by arguably the best centerfielder in the game at that point. Barry Bonds blasted a shot to center, but Torii Hunter leaped over the wall and pulled it back. After the inning ended, Bonds picked Hunter up on his shoulder in good fun.

The game was played to a 7-7 tie, as the managers of each team ran out of pitchers. The managers and umpires agreed that if no team won the game by the 11th inning, they would finish in a tie. At the end of the 11th, the score was still tied, and the game ended. The fans went crazy, cursing out Major League Baseball and the commissioner.

The result forced Major League Baseball to consider a rule change to the game, and it ruled that the game would now decide which league would receive home field advantage in the World Series.
