MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades the Philadelphia Phillies should make
By Brad Weiss
5. Peter Bourjos to the Cleveland Indians
What a time to be a Cleveland sports fan. The city’s basketball team recently pulled off an improbable win in the NBA Finals, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to knock off the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Over at Progressive Field, their Major League Baseball team is doing some damage as well.
Expected to finish close to the bottom in the AL Central, the Indians have had an incredible first-half, and currently sit in first place heading into the All-Star break. They have used some incredible starting pitching to reel off wins, including a 14-game win streak that was snapped a week ago.
What the team could use is some depth in the outfield, where Jose Ramirez, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Rajai Davis get the bulk of the playing time.
The Phillies have a nice utility outfielder in Peter Bourjos, who could fill right in as a fourth outfielder for the Tribe. He is batting .274 on the year, but has been on a tear lately, hitting .408 over his last 18 games. If the Phillies were to try to get a premium deal done for him, they have to strike while the iron is hot.
In return, the Phillies could ask for a prospect or two, notably Mike Clevlinger, a 25-year-old right-handed pitcher who has spent time with the big league club this year. In AAA, he has a 9-0 record in 14 starts, and could find a spot in the Philadelphia rotation tomorrow.
Next: 4. Andrew Bailey to the Chicago Cubs
