Every now and then, amazing athletes screw up.

Robin van Persie is easily one of the best strikers living, which makes it that much funnier when he screws up every now and then. Yesterday in a friendly match, he either forgot where the ball was, forgot what he was doing, forgot how to play soccer, or had a mental lapse on all three counts.

RVP joined Turkish club Fenerbache in 2015 after three years with Manchester United. He still serves as striker for the Netherlands national team, and is their all-time stop scorer.

van Persie is getting slightly old at 32, but he shouldn’t be forgetting where or what things are. Regardless of what happened, this is an incredibly humbling moment for an incredible athlete. van Persie is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of this generation, so seeing him miss what should have been an easy goal is simultaneously humanizing and hilarious. This seems more in line with what you’d see at your cousin’s peewee soccer league, not for one of the greatest strikers of all time.

Recently, van Persie was replaced as the captain of the Netherlands national by Arjen Robben. He accidentally scored an own goal in the Euro 2016 trials, which allowed the Czech Republic to pull off a 3-2 upset of the Netherlands. It’s the first time the Netherlands have missed international play since 2002. Whether van Persie has the yips or whether he’s just getting old is unknown.
