Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim infielder Yunel Escobar gets himself ejected from Sunday’s game with the Baltimore Orioles for playing in the dirt.

In the final game before the 2016 MLB All-Star Game between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Baltimore Orioles, a strange ejection of third baseman Yunel Escobar occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Down 3-1 on the road to the Orioles, Escobar didn’t care for home plate umpire Tim Timmons’ call on a Chris Davis check swing. Escobar playing close to where shortstop normally plays used his right hand to draw a replica of home plate on the Camden Yards infield. Timmons hated Escobar’s artistic masterpiece and ejected the Los Angeles third baseman from the game.

Throughout Escobar’s up and down big league career, he’s developed a reputation as a bit of a hothead. He was difficult in the Atlanta Braves locker room and once inscribed a homophobic slur on his eyeblack tape while with the 2012 Toronto Blue Jays.

So these type of escapades with Escobar are really nothing new. Los Angeles would go on to lose the game to the Orioles 4-2 and Escobar failed to record a hit in his three at-bats on Sunday afternoon.

At the All-Star Break, Los Angeles finds itself in last place in the American League West with a bad 37-52 record. The Angels are 16.5 games back of the first place Texas Rangers in the American League West and 13.0 games back of Toronto for the second American League Wild Card berth.

Only the Minnesota Twins (32-56) and the New York Yankees (34-54) have a worse record in the American League. It’s these type of shenanigans from Escobar that have the Angels in the cellar despite clearly being in win-now mode.
