The 2016 Home Run Derby got started with a bang in the first round on Monday night, as eight of the best sluggers in Major League Baseball park unloaded some huge hits on Petco Park.
First up was the battle between Corey Seager and Mark Trumbo. Trumbo came into the competition as the No. 1 seed, but Seager had an impressive showing with 15 home runs to lead off the event. Trumbo would have to follow with an impressive performance to match him.
In incredible fashion, the No. 1 seed hit 16 to advance past the quarterfinals. The second battle saw Giancarlo Stanton take on former derby winner Robinson Cano. Stanton would lead off with 22 bombs and Cano wouldn’t even come close with just seven.
Wil Myers would hit 10 in front of his own crowd and Adam Duvall would attempt to knock off the crowd favorite. Duvall would calmly hit 11 and would advance his way to the next round.
The final battle in the first round of the Home Run Derby came down to defending champion Todd Frazier taking on Carlos Gonzalez. Gonzalez would hit 12 and the champ would go last to finish out the first round. Frazier would hit 13 right before the end of the round and would move on.
The second round would consist of Trumbo, Stanton, Duvall and Frazier.
