Despite being known as a park designed for pitchers, Petco Park was all about mammoth home runs at the Home Run Derby on Monday night. From the very beginning, Mark Trumbo and Giancarlo Stanton stole the show with the amount of towering home runs they hit.

Both were hitting them out of the park, on top of the park and just about nowhere was safe on the premises. As those two did their thing, Todd Frazier quietly earned himself a spot in the second round of the event, with a stealthy win over Carlos Gonzalez.

In the second round, the two behemoths of the first round of the Home Run Derby would square off in Stanton and Trumbo. Stanton wouldn’t hit 24 like he did in the first round, but he hit a solid 17 to make it tough on Trumbo. Trumbo would fall just short and Stanton would earn his spot in the finals of the Home Run Derby.

In the other semifinal battle, Frazier would take on Adam Duvall. Duvall would smash 15 home runs in a strong showing, but Frazier would hit 16 and would guarantee himself a chance to defend his title against Stanton in the finals of the Home Run Derby.

In the finals, Stanton would once again have a huge performance and would lead off with 20 home runs. Frazier would have to hit 21 home runs if he was going to repeat as champion of the event.

Frazier would give it a great shot, but Stanton was just too much to take down. With the win, Stanton is the first non All-Star since Yoenis Cespedes in 2013 to win the event.
