A look at the second round results from the 2016 Home Run Derby

The second round of the 2016 Home Run Derby featured Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins vs Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles and Adam Duvall of the Cincinnati Reds vs Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox.

In the face off between Stanton and Trumbo, Stanton continued his obscenely long shots, putting several balls in the upper decks. Stanton has easily been the most enjoyable person to watch in the derby with his 24 home runs in the first round. He didn’t hit as many in the semifinal round, but each one of them looked like they could severely wound a grown man with how much power was behind the ball.

Trumbo, not to be outdone by Stanton’s power, smashed one into the scoreboard, which is a rare occurrence in Petco Park, and hit one onto the rooftop. The Trumbo-Stanton half of the bracket was pure power on power, with both of the contestants hitting ridiculously long shots. Trumbo’s moonshots weren’t enough to defeat Stanton’s ruthless consistency, and Stanton advanced with a score of 17-14.

Rookie Adam Duvall squared up against Todd Frazier in the other half of the bracket. Duvall started off strong, taking his timeout at 1 minute after going on a 3 homer roll. He failed to get 2 homers over 440 and get the 30 bonus seconds, but still hit 15 out of the park .

Todd Frazier, defending his Home Run Derby title, started off on a roll. He sent four out in the first minute, and didn’t look back from there. Frazier earned the 30 second bonus, but ultimately didn’t need it. He hit his stride around the two minute mark, hitting around 6 in a row out of the park. Frazier won, 16-15.

Stanton will take on defending champion Frazier in the Finals.
