3. Trade one of their catchers

The Diamondbacks have had a very frustrating 2016 season. One of the very few bright spots has been the discovery of two very capable catchers in Welington Castillo and Chris Herrmann. Both have proven that they have what it takes to be a starter. However, Arizona has needs to fill and they haven’t been able to find another position to put their other catcher. The Diamondbacks should choose one of their catchers to keep and trade the other.

Who is the most logical choice to keep? That would be Castillo. With a very weak free agent market coming up for catchers, if teams want to upgrade behind the plate for next season, they’re going to have to trade for somebody. Castillo has a career 10.0 WAR in 462 games (basically four to five full seasons), proving that he’s at worst a capable catcher. He’s a very safe option and is the better of the duo defensively. Castillo doesn’t have the bat of Herrmann, but Castillo is still a capable hitter.

Herrmann might be the best option to trade because Arizona would be selling high on him. Until this season, his career high OPS+ was 68. He has a career high 123 OPS+ so far in 2016. Herrmann also has some pop with six home runs in 157 at bats.

Having a surplus is almost always a good thing. Keeping both catchers wouldn’t be a terrible idea for Arizona. But they should trade from their catching surplus if it helps them address a need.
