Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin revealed at SEC Media Days that he recently was in contact with former quarterback Johnny Manziel.

For much of the last four football seasons, Johnny Manziel has been one of the most polarizing figures in all of football. Much of it has nothing to do with his first season as the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies in 2012, when he was named the winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Instead, Johnny Football has been the butt of jokes and criticism for much of his off-field issues – some that might end up keeping him out of the league following his release from the Cleveland Browns this March.

While Manziel is trying to prove he is deserving of another chance (including claims of being sober since July 1st), there is one person who has his back no matter what: his college coach at Texas A&M, Kevin Sumlin. During SEC Media Days, Sumlin revealed that he had exchanged text messages with his quarterback recently and will have his back:

Sumlin was pressed to talk about his relationship or elaborate in his thoughts regarding Manziel since the quarterback left College Station, but the coach was quick to stay silent on the subject:

With Manziel likely sitting out this upcoming NFL season as no team seems prepared to sign him at this point, one has to wonder if he may go back home and try to rebuild things at the school that gave him his first chance to shine.
