The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that restricted free agent Victor Rask has signed a six-year deal worth $24 million.

The Carolina Hurricanes have had a busy offseason, locking up key players and signing free agents as they hope to build on their surprisingly strong 2015-16 season. One of their key players last season with forward Victor Rask. A restricted free agent, the Hurricanes wanted to sign him long-term. They have signed him to a six-year deal worth $24 million. Rask will have a $4 million cap hit annually.

“Victor has gotten better every season that he’s been a part of our organization,” said Francis, via NHL.com. “He is a big part of this team’s present and future, and we are thrilled to sign him to a longer-term deal.”

Rask set career highs during his second NHL season with 21 goals, 27 assists, and 48 points in 80 games. He has 32 goals, 49 assists, and 81 points in 160 games during his career. Rask was drafted by the Hurricanes in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft. He won 51.2 percent of his face-offs during the 2015-16 season.

This is an excellent deal for the 23 year old forward. He has the security of a long-term deal and is getting paid roughly market value for his services. For the Hurricanes, this contract could wind up being a bargain. Rask saw his playing time increase during the 2015-16 season due to injuries and he responded well. He scored 48 points despite playing just 16:59 per game. Expect his role to increase with the departure of Eric Staal.
