Recent MLB trade rumors suggest the Miami Marlins are interested in starting pitchers. Who are they targeting?
With the MLB trade deadline less than a month away, there have been plenty of rumors, with some tight races for playoff spots beginning to heat up. One of the teams battling for a playoff spot is the Miami Marlins.
The Marlins went into the All-Star break with a record of 47-41, and according to the Miami Herald, they are looking to acquire a starting pitcher. Barry Jackson of the Herald says the Marlins are interested in Rich Hill, Drew Pomeranz and Jake Odorizzi.
Of the three pitchers mentioned, Odorizzi is having the worst season, and could be the easiest to acquire. Both Hill and Pomeranz are going to be sought after by a lot of teams in contention, which could raise their asking price in a potential trade.
The Marlins have a true ace in Jose Fernandez at the top of their rotation, but it is a bit shaky after him. Wei-Yin Chen has had a very disappointing first half of the season after signing as a free agent, and the Marlins really need a top end of the rotation starter if they are going to make a run at the playoffs.
Miami has already shown a desire to improve, as they recently acquired All-Star Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres to strengthen their bullpen. The two teams the Marlins are competing with in the National League East both have very strong starting rotations, as the Washington Nationals and New York Mets have two of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
If the Marlins are looking to jump both of them in the standings, adding a pitcher like Hill or Pomeranz is going to be a necessary move.
