Shelby Miller has been awful this season for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and is now headed to the minor leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Shelby Miller and his 7.14 ERA has been sent down to the minor leagues, the team reports. Miller will now look to turn his season around pitching for Triple-A Reno.

Seeing an established major league player like Miller being outrighted to the minor leagues like this is extremely rare, but he has been awful this season, leaving the Diamondbacks with no choice but to send him down.

This is not just the case of Miller hurting the Diamondbacks with his awful performance, but the team sinking significant resources in him this off season makes it worse.

The 25-year-old Miller was fantastic for the Atlanta Braves last season, posting a 3.02 ERA in his first ever All-Star season. He appeared to be on the rise as one of the top young arms in all of baseball, making him appealing to many teams around the league as the Braves shopped him.

More from Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks eventually made Miller their trade target, giving the Braves a ton of young and interesting talent in exchange for him.

Arizona sent Atlanta young outfielder Ender Incaiarte, top infield prospect and 2015 first overall pick Dansby Swanson and fire-balling pitcher Aaron Blair, who has legitimate top of the rotation ability.

It was undoubtedly a lot to give up for Miller, and many thought that was the case at the time. That being said, the Diamondbacks were clearly going for it and thought Miller was going to be an impact starter for them.

Unfortunately, Miller has been awful and will now have to try to work things out in Triple-A while the Diamondbacks sit in last place in the NL West at 38-52. This is a team going nowhere fast, and after trading away their future in exchange for Miller, it is tough to find something worth looking forward to.
