In a tribute to arguably their best quarterback of all time, the Colts are building a statue of Peyton Manning at Lucas Oil Stadium.

If you asked someone who the greatest quarterback in Colts history was, you’d get a mixed reaction. Some would say Johnny Unitas. Others would say Unitas doesn’t count, due to the franchise’s move from Baltimore to Indianapolis. Others say that it’s without a doubt Peyton Manning, and they have a strong argument.

Peyton Manning spent 13 years with the Colts, and had double digit wins in his last nine seasons. He won a title in 2006 and went to the playoffs every year for an entire decade, 1999-2010. That alone is worth recommendation, at least.

The Colts plan to take the honors for Manning one step further: They will erect a statue of him at Lucas Oil Stadium, an endeavor that is set to complete in 2017.

Owner Jim Irsay said that the statue would serve as a gathering place for fans, a place that they could “leave cans of Budweiser or notes for Manning.”

Manning is a two time NFL champion, a five time MVP, two time Offensive Player of the Year, and a 14 time all-pro. Even though he finished his last years with the Denver Broncos, Peyton will always be remembered for his time with the Colts and what he did to bring the team from its status as a bit of a punching bag into a serious year-in, year-out AFC contender.
