Houston Cougars head football coach Tom Herman reached out to the Houston Chronicle to dispel all rumors about him contacting other schools for a new job.
On Thursday, rumors started to fly about Houston Cougars head football coach Tom Herman potentially leaving Houston for a Power 5 gig. From the Baylor Bears to the Missouri Tigers to even the Texas A&M Aggies, Herman denied all rumors through the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte.
UH's Tom Herman to @HoustonChron: 'Reports of any contact between me and any other schools are completely ridiculous and absolutely false.'
— Joseph Duarte (@Joseph_Duarte) July 14, 2016
2015 was Herman’s first year as a head coach. He led Houston to an American Athletic Conference Championship, earned the Group of 5’s automatic New Years’ Six Bowl bid, and defeated the ACC’s Florida State Seminoles in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
Herman was previously the offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes, winning the inaugural 2015 College Football Playoff as the National Semifinals’ No. 4 seed. He has arguably the best non-Power 5 program in the country entering 2016 and has a Heisman hopeful at starting quarterback in Greg Ward, Jr.
Obviously, Herman has to deny all rumors of being linked to another head coaching job in Division I, as he is current under contract with the University of Houston to coach their football team.
Reaching out to Cougars beat writer Duarte of the Houston Chronicle was smart and the right thing to do. However, his agent needs to do a better job of not letting these rumors of meetings with other schools matriculate in an important offseason for Herman’s football program.
Houston should be more than capable of staying in the top 25 next season and could be as high as a top 10 program should Ward and the rest of the 2016 Cougars build on their dynamic 2015 NCAA season.
