Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant recently commented on his relationship with former teammate Russell Westbrook and the backlash he’s received from fans over his move.

Kevin Durant, the newest Golden State Warriors star, recently spoke about his relationship with former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook, saying he talked to the star guard before making a decision to leave the team. He also brought up how he feels about all of the backlash he’s received for leaving his longtime squad.

According to China’s Sina Sports, Durant said he wanted to let Westbrook know how he felt about things and went on to say “Obviously our relationship won’t ever be the same again.” The two formed a dangerous tandem of players all over the court, which nearly earned their second trip to the NBA Finals in the past four seasons.

However, the team also fell to the Golden State Warriors in seven games, after leading the series 3-1. Durant would go on to the offseason free agency period as the most sought after of all players, and rightfully so. He’d end up choosing to sign with the team his longtime fans considered fierce rivals based on the most recent playoffs.

That move appears to have made Golden State even stronger than before, and according to Durant, it’s caused him backlash from his former fans. Videos emerged on social media after his decision showing his Thunder jerseys being burned, similar to what happened with LeBron James when he left Cleveland years ago.

The former NBA MVP mentioned during his interview the idea of being called “villains” as part of his new team but said he is “getting used to it,” realizing he can’t please everyone. When it comes down to it, Durant’s main focus appears to be on reaching what should be the ultimate goal of just about every player entering the league: winning an NBA championship.
