The eccentric Washington State head coach provided us with some memorable moments at Pac-12 Media Days.
Let’s be very honest. Mike Leach is a strange, strange person. He’s one of the pioneers of the Air Raid offense along with Hal Mumme, he’s notorious for not caring at all about playing “conventional football,” and his press conference quotes are infamous for their vulgarity and hilarity.
Today, Mike Leach gave us some more patented Mike Leach gems in his Pac-12 Media Days press conference. He gave us his opening statements.
Mike Leach was asked to make opening remarks before media asks questions. His only opening remark was "any questions?" #Pac12MediaDays

He yelled semi-encouraging things at his players during interviews.

He commented on modern technology in general and cell phones in specific.
Mike Leach QOTD: "I think the days before cell phones, when it was dirt clod wars at construction sites, was more wholesome, to be honest."

He tried very hard to understand Pokemon Go (Washington State won’t be getting rare Pokemon in their stadium anytime soon).

When asked about the milestones for his program, he provided us with arguably the best response to a bad question a coach can give.

Here’s that same video, sped up to where Leach sounds like a chipmunk.

He commented on Chris Ault’s victory in the Italian Super Bowl.
Mike Leach said he did a football clinic with Chris Ault in Italy this summer. Ault apparently won the “Italian Super Bowl.”

Last but not least, Mike Leach has absolutely no idea what the Heisman is.
Mike Leach on his belief that QB Luke Falk should have gotten Heisman consideration. "I've lost track of what the Heisman is."

Leach’s Washington State Cougars had an impressive turnaround in 2015, bouncing back from an embarrassing loss to FCS Portland State and a close win at football-inept Rutgers to go 9-4 with a bowl victory over Miami. Mike Leach has made incredible contributions to the sport of football. He re-imagined the way teams play offense. He’ll be remembered for his borderline insanity in press conferences.
