NBA Free Agency: Randy Foye signs with Brooklyn Nets
By John Buhler
The Brooklyn Nets sought to bring in some experience to their backcourt by agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran NBA point guard Randy Foye.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical of Yahoo! Sports, Randy Foye has agreed to a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets.
Foye split the 2015-16 NBA season between the Denver Nuggets and the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the Thunder’s deep Western Conference Playoffs run in 2016, Foye was asked to play a ton of big minutes backing up starting point guard Russell Westbrook.
It seems that Brooklyn has found their backup point guard to complement Jeremy Lin in 2016-17 with Foye. This will be Foye’s seventh NBA team in 11 NBA seasons as a back court piece capable of playing either the point or the two.
After four strong years collegiately with the Villanova Wildcats, Foye went No. 7 overall to the Boston Celtics in the 2006 NBA Draft. Though he never played for the Celtics, Foye is best known for being a solid role player with the Minnesota Timberwolves and with the Nuggets.
Choosing to sign Foye to a one-year deal feels like a wise move for new Nets general manager Sean Marks. Foye will provide a complement in the backcourt to Lin and will help bring along young players like Caris LeVert and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Brooklyn’s two premier prospects.
Should the Nets fall out of playoff contention, as they probably will mid-season, Marks can then trade Foye for something in return from a playoff caliber team in need of a back court boost. For as long as Foye remains in Brooklyn, he’ll be a player that new head coach Kenny Atkinson can lean on to bring his young team along in this lengthy rebuilding process.
