Report: Red Sox acquire Drew Pomeranz from Padres for prospect

Boston willing to part with a top prospect to acquire the San Diego lefty.
The Red Sox have landed left-hander Drew Pomeranz in a trade with the Padres, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. The report did not say who Boston will give up, but it did say it was for a top prospect. Pomeranz, 27, is a former first round pick (fifth overall) from 2010 and the Red Sox will be his fourth club in six major league seasons.
This year with the Padres, he is 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 17 starts, holding opponents to a .184 average. He has also fanned 115 in in 102 innings. Currently signed to a one-year, $1.35M contract, he is arbitration eligible after the season, although he does not hit the free agent market until 2019. Pomeranz just appeared in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, pitching a scoreless inning.
Over the course of his career, Pomeranz is 22-31 with a 3.66 ERA averaging nearly a punchout per inning (376 in 393.2 frames). He broke in with the Rockies before joining the Athletics and then the Padres.
The second place Red Sox were looking to add a pair of starters to their rotation before the deadline as they hope to track down the Orioles, who sit atop the AL East by two games. With the addition of Pomeranz, they could still be in the market for a right-hander.
The Padres, who are a half-game out of last place in the NL West, have already begun their dismantling after shipping James Shields to the White Sox and Fernando Rodney to the Marlins.
