To say that the 2016 Tour de France has played out just as everyone would have expected as we near the halfway point of the biggest race in cycling would be a flat-out lie. Even if the man in the lead is the one that everyone expected to win the whole Tour de France, that Chris Froome would be this dominant this early is a bit of a surprise as the racers head into Stage 12 on Thursday, July 14.

Despite being the favorite, the fact that Froome has already opened up a lead of 28 seconds on the competition is great news for the British cyclist. Now Froome has the ability to remain the favorite in the 2016 Tour de France by simply playing defense for the rest of the race. Considering the fact that he’s already increased his lead since taking the yellow jersey, though, it’s likely that won’t be his strategy just yet.

The big question heading into Thursday’s Stage 12 of the Tour de France is what will happen on the 184 kilometers from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux where the forecast is calling for insanely high gusts of winds throughout the stage. All in all, this could be the most unpredictable stage yet.
