How much guaranteed money did Von Miller get?
Von Miller’s new contract could be worth as much as $114.5 million. But how much is he getting guaranteed in that deal?
The standoff between the Denver Broncos and star linebacker Von Miller could have ended ugly. With reports that the two sides weren’t close and that Miller wasn’t going to play in 2016 without a franchise tag, perhaps that’s all that was needed to get a deal done. The two sides have officially agreed on a six-year deal that could be worth as much as $114.5 million. It will be worth at least $70 million guaranteed.
Miller’s $70 million guaranteed makes it the second largest guaranteed contract in NFL history, trailing only the recent contract signed by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. He will be the highest paid defensive player of all-time. Miller beat Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox’s previous record for guaranteed money by a defensive player by $6.701 million.
Denver made a wise decision to keep Miller. He is the league’s premier pass rushing linebacker and he helped lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl win in 2015. Miller has double digit sacks in four of his first five NFL seasons and had 11 in 2015. He has proven to be quite durable, only missing eight games in his first five seasons. Seven of those games were in 2013.
Miller recovered three fumbles in 2015, a career high for him. He also had 35 combined tackles. Miller’s extension should set the bar for defensive players from here on out.
