Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed a deal is in place to send Mario Gotze back to Borussia Dortmund.
Earlier this summer, Mario Gotze rejected a move to Liverpool and his former manager, stating that his future was with Bayern Munich. But ever since he moved there, he has never established a starting spot, and looked a shell of the electrifying player that he was at Borussia Dortmund. After two straight 15-goal seasons, he put up a total of six goals last year. That form has even spilled over to the national team, where he turned in a poor performance at the Euros.
But while he wouldn’t join his former manager, The Mirror is reporting that Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is working on a deal to send Gotze back to his former club. Here are his comments:
"I can confirm that talks with Borussia Dortmund have taken place over Mario Götze. The deal is not done just yet. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement over a transfer fee first. Mario is 24 years old and needs to play regularly. It did not work out for him here so I’m not surprised he decided to leave."
Normally, when we see a transfer involving Bayern Munich, it involves them taking a player from Borussia Dortmund and not the other way around. But as much as Dortmund fans try to say they’ve disowned Gotze, they would surely welcome him back after another one of their players, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, left them to join Manchester United.
Gotze is a good player, but he needs to be placed in a conducive environment, and one where he’ll be happy. That will be the case at Dortmund, where he’ll be reunited with his friend Marco Reus, the one player that has stayed the course with Dortmund.
It’s not always the case that a player’s form dips when they leave their old club; Robert Lewandowski has thrived at Bayern Munich, but that was clearly the case with Mario Gotze. We’ve seen before how a player is reinvigorated when they return to their old stomping grounds, as Fernando Torres has looked like his old self at Atletico Madrid. Gotze will be hoping to replicate that form while doing his best to win back the Borussia Dortmund faithful.
