High Salary SP

Jeff Samardzija-San Francisco Giants (9,200): Samardzija is the most expensive pitcher of the night even though he only comes in at 9,200. Madison Bumgarner didn’t have a great start yesterday as the Padres beat the Giants 4-1, but Samardzija will try to turn things around for San Francisco tonight at Petco Park.

On the season, Samardzija is 9-5 in 18 starts with a 3.91 ERA.  He had allowed four runs or more in three straight starts before a strong outing in his last start before the break when he held the D-Backs to just two runs in 6.1 innings.  The reason I think he’s a good play tonight is that he has fared especially well against the Padres in three starts this season.  He has picked up the win in all three starts and has a 3.10 ERA in those outings.  He has 22 strikeouts in 20.1 innings against the Padres, so I thin he’ll put up good numbers tonight at Petco. ∗∗∗∗

Danny Duffy-Kansas City Royals (8,800): Like the Giants, the Royals also dropped a divisional game last night to start the second half.  They’ll look to Danny Duffy to help them bounce back against the Tigers in Detroit tonight.  Duffy is 4-1 on the year with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.

Duffy has been especially effective lately allowing exactly two runs in each of his last three starts while going 6.1, 8.2, and 8.0 innings.  Duffy has also been picking up nice strikeout numbers with at least seven strikeouts in four straight starts and 94 on the season in just 81.2 innings. His best starts of the season have come on the road where he is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA.  The only reason he doesn’t get more stars is that he has struggled a bit this season against the Tigers.

Tanner Roark-Washington Nationals (8,500): If you roll with Roark just make sure the weather is going to cooperate as he and the Nationals look to make it two in a row against the visiting Pirates.  Roark had a strong first half going 8-5 with a 3.01 ERA behind Scherzer and Strasburg in the Nationals rotation.  He went at least seven innings in each of his last four starts and improved to 8-5 in his last start which came before the break against the Brewers.

Roark usually posts solid midrange strikeout numbers with between 5-7 in five of his last six starts.  He hasn’t faced the Pirates this season, but he has a nice 2.64 home ERA and averages almost a strikeout per inning at Nationals Park. The Pirates’ lineup struggled last night against Strasburg, and Roark will look to keep their bats on ice tonight in DC.∗∗
