Andrew Johnston — better known as Beef Johnston — has become the most lovable character at the 145th Open Championship this weekend. His legend grew when a photo of his 58-degree wedge reached social media.

While Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson are battling atop The Open Championship’s leaderboard, the one they call “Beef” — Andrew Johnston — has been lurking behind them on the board.

The European Tour star has found himself among some of the top headlines of the weekend because of his surprising performance among the best golfers on the planet.

But, how did Andrew Johnston become “Beef” Johnston?

Well, it all started as a kid when a friend called him “Beefhead,” because when his hair was longer and curly, it looked like beef on top of his head. The nickname was shortened to “Beef” over the years and it’s stuck ever since.

On top of that, Johnston is just a happy-go-lucky guy that loves playing to the crowd and what’s helped his cult following grow is his performance at Royal Troon over the weekend. He’s in the second-to-last grouping on Sunday at The Open and sits tied for third at -6 overall, seven shots off the lead.

His nickname? Awesome.

But, his 58-degree wedge in his bag this weekend? Superb.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. You’re reading it correctly. Beef Johnston had different cuts of steak stamped on to his wedge.

What a legend.

It’s not wrong to assume that he’s had one of each cut during his time at The Open this weekend. He’s earned it with his play.

Johnston may not win the tournament, but in terms of the entertainment factor, not even Phil Mickelson could challenge the popularity of Beef this weekend. He’s been that fun to watch.
