Phil Mickelson drains huge par putt on No. 12 at Open Championship (Video)
After a rough start to the 12th hole and needing a par to keep pace with Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson drained the biggest putt of the tournament at the 2016 Open Championship.
Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson both sat at -16 overall for the tournament in the 2016 Open Championship as they approached the 12th tee box. Both players have been going shot-for-shot and putt-for-putt during the final round of the tournament and it’s been must-see-television.
Stenson approached the green in two shots with a birdie putt left, while two poor shots from Mickelson left him with a lengthy par putt to keep a share of the lead.
Spoiler alert: He drained it because he’s Phil Mickelson.
In terms of shots up to this point in the tournament — which has basically become a two-man race to the finish — this par putt conversion is probably the biggest of the day for Mickelson and arguably the best of his weekend.
The way Stenson’s been playing (and putting for that matter), Mickelson needed this putt to drop badly and getting it to sink was huge. His chance to win his sixth major tournament and his second Claret Jug stayed alive with this putt.
There’s a lot of golf left, but if Mickelson goes on to win this tournament, you can go back to his par putt at the 12th hole and say, “That’s the putt that did it for him.”
This tournament has easily been the best performance from Mickelson all season and could lead to him winning his first major and his first tournament since the 2013 Open Championship.
