Los Angeles is hoping to revive the slumping career of a youngster who is still just 24.

Sean Coyle entered the season as the Red Sox No. 13 prospect in their system, according to the MLB Pipeline, but that wasn’t good enough for them to keep him, according to a report by MLB Trade Rumors.

The 24 year old, who can play second or third, was designated for assignment last week and was claimed off waivers by the Angels today which will probably land him among the top prospects in the Los Angeles organization. Coyle has struggle the last two years with a .159/.274/.302 slashline in 39 games at Pawtucket a year ago. This season he didn’t fare any better playing at both Double-A Portland and Pawtucket checking in with .165/.263/.280 splits.

A former third round pick in the 2010 draft, Coyle had been progressing nicely through Boston’s system and was showing some signs he wasn’t that far away from the majors after putting up 16 homers and 61 RBI in just 97 games to go along with 13 steals in 14 attempts for the Class-AA Sea Dogs.

Following a disappointing showing in the Arizona Fall League after the 2014 Portland season, his productivity fell off drastically with each successive season and the Sox have simply given up on him, even though he is still just 24 year old.

Over the course of his seven minor league seasons, Coyle is still a .240 average hitter with 66 homers and 262 runs batted in to go along with 68 stolen bases being caught a dozen times. He had previously shown a good eye drawing 207 walks although if there is something that could be alarming for the Angels, he strikes out far too many ties (554) and those numbers have increased over the last few years.
