Kevin Durant welcomed to Warriors by rapper Lil B
By Matt Couden
New Golden State Warriors player Kevin Durant has officially been welcomed to his new team by hip hop star Lil B, famous for previously putting a curse on the former OKC star.
The BasedGod has spoken, yet again. Rapper Lil B recently put together his thoughts in an open letter to superstar Kevin Durant, the newest member of the Golden State Warriors. After previously placing a curse on Durant, the letter is much kinder in nature and supportive of the Warriors’ offseason acquisition.
Lil B famously placed a curse on Durant five years ago after Durant had said he couldn’t listen to the rapper’s music because it was “wack.” While many fans of hip-hop, or music in general, may agree, Lil B was clearly bothered by the basketball star’s opinion. He challenged Durant to a game of one-on-one which didn’t happen, so he decided it was time to curse Durant’s career with the Oklahoma City Thunder. That career included ups and downs, but no championships for the Thunder.
On July 4th, the Bay Area rapper decided it was time to lift the curse, since Durant is officially playing for his home team Warriors. Oddly, Lil B was the only rapper in the Bay Area who seemed to take issue with Durant when he wasn’t on the team. Warriors fan E-40 never made a peep or tweet about the superstar during his days with OKC.
Now the rapper whose real name is Brandon Christopher McCartney is extending further pleasantries to Durant while explaining his reason for the curse and its subsequent lifting. A full letter was recited to The Undefeated where the hip-hop artist notes he doesn’t owe the NBA star any apology and felt this move by Durant to the Warriors was “foreseen.”
Lil B mentions in his lengthy letter, “I want him to hang out with the people of the Bay Area. Have fun. Listen to the music. Get a feel of everybody around. Different places. Feel the welcome.” It’s clear there’s nothing but love from The BasedGod towards KD now.
In addition, Lil B still says he wants a game of one-on-one against the former NBA MVP. It may benefit both celebrities if they do so, but all the publicity has clearly benefited the rapper more. His tweet where he lifted the curse was retweeted over 100,000 times on Twitter. If the two personalities happen to play, maybe Durant can unleash his own curse, “the curse of broken ankles and shattered dreams,” while getting a bit of sweet payback on the rapper who tried to throw shade at him.
The good news is that it seems these two are on a path towards mending their differences. Perhaps Durant will also come around to enjoying Bay Area music more, including the sounds of Lil B. At the very least, he can have less sleepless nights knowing he probably won’t be cursed unless he decides in the future to leave Golden State for another squad.
