Minnesota Twins fire general manager Terry Ryan
The Minnesota Twins have announced that long time employee and general manager Terry Ryan has been relieved of his duties.
After a very rough first half, the Minnesota Twins needed to make some changes. They have decided to go with a very unexpected and sudden change by firing long time employee Terry Ryan. Ryan has been involved with the Twins since 1972 as a player and since 1992 as a member of their front office.
Ryan will be replaced by Assistant General Manager Rob Antony. Ryan in his second tenure as the Twins general manager, serving as their GM from 1992 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2016. It appears that Ryan will not be taking another job with the Twins organization, ending his long relationship with the team. Antony had been in the assistant general manager role since 2007. He has been involved with the team for 29 seasons, including a stint as the Director of Baseball Operations.
It is interesting that the Twins relieved Ryan of his duties so close to the trade deadline. That means that Antony will not have much of a learning curve and will have to be active on the trade market in his first few weeks as general manager. It remains to be seen if Antony is a long-term option or if he is more of an interim general manager until the offseason when the Twins can look at other alternatives. Antony should be good to go for the trade deadline considering his front office experience.
