NHL Trade: Ottawa Senators acquire Derick Brassard from New York Rangers
The New York Rangers have traded center Derick Brassard to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for center Mika Zibanejad and a 2018 second round pick.
The New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators were expected to make huge changes during this offseason. Up until July 18, they had not made any big moves. However, they have both made the kind of change that was expected from both teams. The two sides have agreed on a trade that will send center Derrick Brassard to the Senators and center Mika Zibanejad to the Rangers.
From NHL.com:
"Brassard, 28, was selected in the first round (sixth overall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Draft. After spending the first five-plus seasons of his career with Columbus, he has spent the last three-plus seasons with New York and established a new NHL career high with a team-leading 27 goals for the Rangers in 2015-16."
The Senators are getting a very good player in Brassard. Brassard is a very good scoring line center who is still relatively young. Best of all, he still has a very reasonable cap hit of $5 million that isn’t set to expire until after the 2018-19 season.
Meanwhile, the Rangers are getting a younger and similar player in Zibanejad. He had 51 points and 21 goals in 2015-16 and will be a restricted free agent after the 2016-17 season. Zibanejad currently has a $2.625 million cap hit. They get a bit of cap space, though that might disappear once Zibanejad signs his next contract.
