When exactly is the 2016 MLS All-Star Game taking place?
The MLS All-Star game has been going on ever since the league was created back in 1996. Since then, there have been changes to the format of who will play who. It started off being the classic East vs West, but in 1998, the league decided to do a MLS USA vs MLS World, which was players in the league that were born in the U.S taking on players in the league born abroad.
They then went back to the East vs West showdown from 1999-2001, but MLS All-Stars vs Guest in 2002 and 2003. The “Guests” were the U.S National Team and then Guadalajara in the Liga MX. They would go back to East vs West in 2004 but since 2005 have invited pro clubs from around the world.
Teams like Chelsea, West Ham United, Celtic, Bayern Munich, Roma, Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United (who they faced twice) have taken on the best MLS has to offer.
This year, English Premier League side Arsenal are making the trip over to take on MLS at San Jose Earthquakes’ Avaya Stadium. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m ET/4:30 p.m PT.
The league has released the schedule that will start on Sunday July 24th and go until the game on the 28th. First there is a Johnson & Johnson Care Run, followed by a concert from Flo Rida and Belanova on the 25th. On July 26th, there will be an open practice for MLS All-Stars. On the 27th, MLS young stars will compete in the Chipotle Homegrown Game and take on Mexico’s U23 team.
