15 reasons Summer Olympics are better than Winter Olympics
By Brad Weiss
6. The timing of the games
The Summer Games are played every four years in the middle of the summer, giving it an advantage over the Winter Games. The summer months are known for having a good time and enjoying life, while the winter months are gray and cold.
During the summer time, most major television shows are on hiatus, giving the Olympics top billing during the few weeks of competition. The Summer Olympics are the number one thing on TV, as almost all of the major sports are also not in season, except for the dog days of the baseball season. The baseball season does not really get intense until September rolls around, giving the Summer Olympics the perfect window to be shown.
In the Winter, the Olympics have to contend with the NHL and the NBA, as well as big television shows that have a loyal audience. Also, the Winter Games do not have the kind of events that major audiences tune in for, outside of a Hockey finale or Figure Skating. A gold medal Basketball game, or soccer finale, is sure to drive the number, even if there was something else on TV.
The Summer Games are also played when people are on vacation, giving people more opportunity to sit down and watch the competition. As discussed earlier, millions more people tune in to watch the Summer Games over the Winter ones, and the fact that they are played in the middle of the summer is no coincidence.
