2. Fans can relate

A major reason for the popularity of the Summer Games is the fact that people can relate to the sports. Most people have played at least one of the sports in the Summer Games before, leading them to be drawn to specific events. Whether it is basketball, soccer, or even table tennis, there will always be one sport that resonates with the individual.

Unlike the Winter Games, the Summer Games include major sports, as well as individual sports. Aside from Hockey, the Winter Games include events that the average person may never have tried in their life. If you cannot ice skate, or have never lived by the cold weather, you really cannot relate to the athletes.

Summer Olympics events include sports that people play when they are a kid, all the way up to adulthood. These sports are taught in schools, as well as in after-school activities, and some of the events actually are spun off of games people played as children.

Sports like ice skating and skiing are also very expensive to get involved in, as they require costly equipment just to compete. In contrast, anyone can go outside and race their friends, or jump in a pool and swim. The games of the Summer Olympics are just more relate-able to the average person, and that is why they attract more fans every Olympics.
