Canelo Alvarez has called Gennady Golovkin’s opponents easy in anticipation of their expected showdown in fall of 2017.
Even though Canelo Alvarez has been the one accused of avoiding a superfight with Gennady Golovkin up until this point, he begs to differ. After a long period of negotiations, the two parties have supposedly agreed to fight in the fall of 2017, but have decided to stay active in the meantime.
Even though Canelo’s next fight will be against Liam Smith, he’s the one who has criticized Golovkin’s next fight against British star Kell Brook. It’s expected to be the toughest test of GGG’s career thus far, but in a recent phone interview with Ring TV, Canelo doesn’t see it that way.
When talking about Golovkin’s career resume thus far, this is what he had to say:
"All of his opponents have been the easy road. He has never fought someone who has really pushed him or taken him to the next level. All of his opponents have been easy opponents."
Then, when discussing the matchup with Kell Brook, he called him out on cherry picking someone from a different weight class. Even though Canelo was accused of doing the same for the Amir Khan fight, by Golovkin himself no less, he’s well aware of that:
"I only made Amir Khan go up one weight class. People say it was two but it was only one and this guy Brook is moving up two to fight GGG at 160. And that’s the reason it’s good not to speak or make comments on things that are out there."
It is true that Golovkin hasn’t fought guys with the same resume as Amir Khan, Floyd Mayweather, or Miguel Cotto before. But a lot of that has to do with the fact that GGG is one of the most feared fighters in the middleweight division, and people aren’t willing to risk their lives to fight him.
However, it isn’t right for Canelo to criticize the Kell Brook fight when he took a similar path with Amir Khan, and when his next opponent will be Liam Smith. But if he’s trying to build up interest in their upcoming fight, or prove that he doesn’t fear Golovkin, you’ve at least got to commend him for it.
