DraftKings MLB Picks For July 19

All 15 teams are back in action for the main tournament tonight, including several aces that were given extended rest over the break. Who is worth paying up for? Let’s check out the past stats to see if we can dig up some gems to go with an ace.

More from DraftKings

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

A Zack is pitching for Arizona tonight. Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, it is Zack Godley getting the start, not the still injured Zack Greinke. Godley has a 5.28 ERA this year in two starts and four relief appearances this year. Don’t even think about using him against the Blue Jays.

Junior Guerra has never faced the Pirates, but the 31 year old rookie is 6-2 with a 3.02 ERA this year. You can do worse.

Jameson Taillon has yet to face the Brewers. He has been solid so far in his young career, posting a 2-1 record and a 3.86 ERA. The Brewers are still a work in progress on offense. He is worth a look if you don’t trust the upper tier.

22 year old Reynaldo Lopez will make his major league debut against the Angels tonight. The Angels aren’t a pushover. I wouldn’t chance it. However, if you do take the plunge, Lopez racked up 100 strikeouts in 76.2 innings at AA Harrisburg.

Jose Urena will make his first start of 2016 after starting nine games last year for the Marlins. He has had little success in the big league so far, posting a 7.52 ERA in relief this year. He was marginally better at 5.25 last year. You should probably avoid this one.

Cody Reed has a staggering 8.39 ERA. It’s hard to recommend him, even against a terrible offense like the Braves. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Tyrell Jenkins didn’t pitch that badly in his first career start on July 6th against the Phillies. He gave up only one run on four hits and a walk through 4.2 innings. He was able to stretch out some more over the break, so he may be able to go a little deeper against the Reds. He is not a terrible option, but we know little about him too.

Blake Snell has never faced the Rockies, and though he has a respectable 3.69 ERA, it will likely be inflated by Coors Field. It’s likely best to stay away from this game. Well, at least stay away from the pitchers.

Tyler Chatwood has never faced the Rays, and while his 3.29 ERA looks very nice, his ERA at home is 5.32. There are better options.

Brian Flynn will make the start against Cleveland. His 2.39 ERA looks good, but he has pitched mostly in relief. How deep will he go?

Best Bets:

Danny Salazar ($11,300): Salazar may very well be the highest scorer today, but I have my doubts that he provides enough value for his price. You likely wont get 3x value considering his history against the Royals. They are only hitting .226 off of him in 208 at bats, but they have five homers and 22 runs despite the 55 strikeouts. The saving grace is that Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain are out. Moose has two homers and five RBI by himself!

Honorable Mention:

Aaron Sanchez ($9,900): Aaron Sanchez has never faced the Diamondbacks, but he has been brilliant this year with a 9-1 record and 2.97 ERA. If you were to take a chance with him instead of the uninspiring numbers that the aces have against their opponents today, I wouldn’t blame you. In fact, I may even join you!

Dark Horses:

Vance Worley ($4,700): The Vanimal has put up a 2.87 ERA this season, pitching mostly in relief. He will get a start against a Yankee team that is only hitting .246 against him in 61 at bats with a homer, five runs, and 15 strikeouts. The only real concern here is just how deep into the game Worley will be able to go while still being effective. There is real potential here if you need to go cheap.

Jake Peavy ($4,500): It’s a tough sell recommending Peavy against Boston, but the current Sox roster has only hit .209 against Peavy in 91 at bats with two homers, only six runs, and an impressive 25 strikeouts. That said, Peavy has never faced Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, or Jackie Bradley Jr. If it’s any consolation, David Ortiz is 3-10 against Peavy, but all of the hits are singles.

Anibal Sanchez ($4,300): Yes, I do realize that Anibal has a 6.75 ERA. I also realize that the Twins have only hit .233 against him in 120 at bats with only one homer, ten runs, and 27 strikeouts. Those aren’t elite numbers, but this is a struggling offense that still hasn’t beaten the Tigers in seven games this year. Perhaps it is no coincidence that he hasn’t faced the Twins this year.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Jake Arrieta struggled heading into the break. Now coming out he encounters a team that has hit him well. Asdrubal Cabrera ($3,500) is 5-11(.455) with a walk, two homers, and four RBI against Arrieta. Yoenis Cespedes ($4,100) is only 2-9, but he has a walk, a double, a homer, and three RBI. Travis d’Arnaud ($2,900) is 3-5 with two RBI. Curtis Granderson ($4,300) is 10-30 with three walks, two doubles, a triple, three homers, and nine RBI against Arrieta. Neil Walker ($2,700) is a pedestrian 6-28(.214), but he has a walk, a double, a homer, and three RBI against Arrieta.

Danny Valencia ($3,800) is 7-13(.538) with three walks, two doubles, two homers, and four RBI against Dallas Keuchel. Jed Lowrie ($2,300) is 9-26(.346) with two doubles and three RBI. Marcus Semien ($4,100) is 6-15, with a RBI off Keuchel. Coco Crisp ($3,200) is 7-24(.292) with five walks, three doubles and a RBI.

The Mariners have six homers against Jose Quintana in only 95 at bats. You know there are stacks here. Nori Aoki ($2,000) is 7-17(.412) with a walk, two doubles, and a RBI. Robinson Cano ($4,400) is 5-14(.357) with two walks, but no other counting stats. Nelson Cruz ($4,200) is only 3-14(.214), but he has a solo homer. Franklin Gutierrez ($3,200) is 2-6 with a double, a homer, and three RBI off Quintana. Leonys Martin ($2,800) only has one hit in four at bats, but it is a solo homer. Kyle Seager ($3,600) is only 2-13(.154), but both hits are homers and he has driven in five.

Gregor Blanco ($3,200) is 4-13(.308) with a walk, a double, a triple, and a RBI off of Rick Porcello. Conor Gillaspie ($3,200) is worth playing if he gets a start. He is 10-24(.417) with a double, a homer, and six RBI off of Porcello from his A.L. days. Denard Span ($4,100), another former A.L. foe, is 12-32(.375) with two walks and four RBI against Porcello. Jarrett Parker ($3,300) is 1-2 with a solo homer. Angel Pagan ($4,000) is 3-5 with a double and two RBI, so it isn’t just the former A.L. players that have hit Porcello well.

Jose Iglesias ($2,700) may be a great cheap option once again. Iglesias is 2-5 with a solo homer against Tom Milone. Miguel Cabrera ($4,300) is 6-15 with two walks, a double, and a RBI. Ian Kinsler ($5,000) is 6-19(.316) with a homer and four RBI against Milone. Victor Martinez ($3,400) is 5-10 with a RBI. At least MIlone doesn’t have to deal with J.D. Martinez, who has a homer and five RBI against him.

Stack some White Sox against Wade Miley, even though he is in a pitcher’s park. Jose Abreu ($3,400) is 3-11 with a homer and two RBI off Miley. Melky Cabrera ($3,700) is 5-9 with two doubles and two RBI. Todd Frazier ($4,800) is 4-12 with two walks, a double, and a solo homer. Brett Lawrie ($3,200) is 4-7 with a walk, a homer, and three RBI against Miley.

Yangervis Solarte ($3,300) is 2-8 with a solo homer against Carlos Martinez. Derek Norris ($2,800) is 3-5 with a triple. In fact, the Padres are hitting .355 against Martinez. There could be some sleepers here.

Eric Hosmer ($2,900) is 8-24(.333) with three walks, four doubles, two homers, and six RBI against Danny Salazar.

Jayson Werth ($4,500) is 5-7 with a walk, a double, and a solo homer off of Scott Kazmir. Danny Espinosa ($4,400) is 2-5 with a solo homer against Kazmir. Even Bryce Harper ($4,700) took him deep in three at bats.

Shin-Soo Choo ($4,700) is 3-4 with two walks, two doubles, and a solo homer against Tim Lincecum. Ian Desmond ($3,900) is an impressive 10-15 with a walk, two doubles, two homers, and six RBI against Lincecum. Prince Fielder ($2,900) is a pedestrian 4-17(.235), but he has five walks, two doubles, and three RBI.

Christian Yelich ($4,800) is 2-5 with a triple, a homer, and two RBI against Vince Velasquez. Martin Prado ($2,900) is 3-6 with two doubles and a RBI off Vasquez.

If the Twins start Danny Santana ($3,500) tonight, he may be worth using. Santana is 6-14(.429) with a RBI against Anibal Sanchez.

If Caleb Joseph ($2,600) gets the start tonight, play him. Joseph is 4-5 with a double, a homer, and two RBI against Nate Eovaldi. Matt Wieters ($3,800) has also hit him well, going 2-5 with three RBI. No matter which catcher the Orioles choose, you are covered.

If you want another catcher option, Yadier Molina ($3,000) is 2-4 with a walk and two RBI against Colin Rea.
