MLB Trade Deadline: 5 best spots for Brett Gardner
What teams would be the best fit for a Brett Gardner trade?
As the trade deadline approaches it becomes more and more likely that the Yankees will be selling. This is a team with too many players on the wrong side of age 32. They are slowly fading back in the American League East and are chasing four teams for the fifth wild card spot.
When you look at their roster the question really becomes who are they attached to keeping at this point? Masahiro Tanaka and their prospects aside, this team should be listening to offers for anyone.
Of all of their outfielders, they would probably like to unload Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran the most, but the most return they would get would be in trading Brett Gardner. In the case of Ellsbury, you are looking for a team to take on not just the player, but the contract of paying him $21 million per year over the next five years. He is giving similar production to Gardner, who is only signed for two more years at about $11 million per. In the case of Beltran, the team is renting a player for one season and having leave via free agency the year after.
Therefore, if teams who need outfield help come calling, the first name they are going to go to is more than likely Gardner. They will have to at least listen to these offers before they can talk any other deals, so they will be weighing these options.
Gardner would be nice to keep in the club house, and the contract is nice, but there is a price for everything and some teams may be able to hit the right note and complete a deal.
With that said, here are the five best sports for Brett Gardner.
