3. Miami Marlins

The Marlins will have some soul-searching to do as they head toward the trade deadline and have to decide how comfortable they feel being buyers this year. Many saw this team being a year or two away from competing to start this season. However, they now sit 5.5 games behind the Nationals in the division and lead the second wild card spot by a game over the Mets.

The division was supposed to be between the Mets and the Nationals to battle over, but with the Mets’ injury luck, it feels as though the Marlins can really take advantage this year.

That said, they will need some help to keep this run going. They have some problems in the infield, but mainly they need to boost up their rotation.

Jose Fernandez has been amazing, everything you could ask for from an ace.  They have also found consistent pitching from 26-year-old Adam Conley. Wei-Yin Chen has been established as a depth arm, but the rest of the crew has been shaky.

Tom Koehler, Zack Cosart, and Justin Nicolino have all shuffled in and out of the rotation. The fish are going to 24-year-old Jose Urena to look for a jolt in the rotation. Urena does not have the pedigree or success in lower levels to look like a real addition.

That said, they need a starting pitcher. Pineda has the experience, and in a much tougher ballpark than Marlins Park, has a better ERA than Nicolino and Cosart this year. His strikeout ability behind the strikeout king Fernandez should help the defense, and while it may cost a mid-level prospect, the Marlins do have a young core already established to build around moving forward. It seems like it could be a good fit.
